{"id":11662,"date":"2026-03-18T15:57:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T20:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=11662"},"modified":"2026-03-18T15:57:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T20:57:45","slug":"nzs-9th-covid-19-wave-why-infections-are-rising-and-how-booster-shots-still-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2026\/03\/18\/nzs-9th-covid-19-wave-why-infections-are-rising-and-how-booster-shots-still-help\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ\u2019s 9th COVID\u201119 wave: why infections are rising \u2013 and how booster shots still\u00a0help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/nzs-9th-covid-19-wave-why-infections-are-rising-and-how-booster-shots-still-help-278075\">The Conversation<\/a> Six years after COVID-19 first reached New Zealand, the country is experiencing its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/589011\/ninth-wave-of-covid-19-suggests-wane-in-immunity-expert-says-everyone-must-act-to-reduce-impact\">ninth wave of infections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the virus we are living with today behaves very differently from the one that caused the global emergency in 2020\u201322.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large outbreaks can still occur, but thanks to widespread immunity built through vaccination and infection, COVID now behaves more like other respiratory viruses that circulate each year in our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthnz.govt.nz\/about-us\/health-data\/data-sets-and-collections\/covid-19-data-and-statistics\/covid-19-reporting\">Hospital admissions<\/a>&nbsp;are currently around half the level seen during most of last winter, which itself was below earlier waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/poops.nz\/\">Wastewater monitoring<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 which tracks fragments of the virus shed into sewage \u2013 similarly points to a longer-term year-on-year decline in COVID activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand no longer publishes up-to-date reporting of COVID-attributed deaths, but earlier data showed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/minhealthnz\/nz-covid-data\/blob\/main\/cases\/weekly-deaths.csv\">a clear downward trend<\/a>.
