{"id":12052,"date":"2026-05-20T13:44:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T18:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=12052"},"modified":"2026-05-20T13:44:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T18:44:50","slug":"behind-the-mission-to-stop-viral-outbreaks-within-100-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2026\/05\/20\/behind-the-mission-to-stop-viral-outbreaks-within-100-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the Mission to Stop Viral Outbreaks Within 100 Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/05\/19\/cepi-mission-to-stop-viral-outbreaks-within-100-days\/\">Time Magazine<\/a> here are at least two major viral outbreaks underway in the world right now: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/05\/04\/hantavirus-outbreak-cruise-ship\/\">Andes hantavirus outbreak that began on a cruise ship<\/a>&nbsp;and now involves people from more than 20 countries, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/05\/18\/american-has-ebola-outbreak\/\">Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak<\/a>&nbsp;in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which was only very recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/05\/15\/new-ebola-outbreak-democratic-republic-of-congo\/\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;but which has already killed 131 people and crossed at least one border. No vaccines exist yet for either of these rare strains of already rare diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7328701\/pandemic-preparedness-operation-outbreak-game\/\">world is underprepared<\/a>\u00a0for threats that are already here, global-health experts argue. Will we be ready for whatever comes next? This is the type of question that consumes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cepi.net\/\">Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)<\/a>, a group of world governments, pharmaceutical companies, and foundations, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/e4c373fb2d3b\/wha79-side-event-from-outbreak-response-to-system-readiness\">hosted a gathering<\/a>\u00a0at the 79th session of the World Health Organization\u2019s World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 19. \u201cWe now have the chance, and I would say the responsibility, to change what happens next,\u201d said Jane Halton, CEPI\u2019s chair, at the session. \u201cMy call to everyone here today\u2014to all of your organizations, all of your governments\u2014is simple but urgent. The threats are out there. So let&#8217;s secure the future together.
