In September 2014, Liberian traveler Thomas Eric Duncan became ill while visiting family in Texas and was hospitalized in Dallas, where two nurses who cared for him later contracted the virus. Both healthcare workers recovered after specialized treatment, while Duncan died from the illness. Around the same time, a New York physician who had treated Ebola patients in Guinea also developed the disease after returning to the United States but later recovered following treatment.
