Two new omicron subvariants have overtaken BA.5 as the prevailing versions of the coronavirus in the U.S. BA.5\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/omicron-ba5-ba4-covid-symptoms-vaccines-rcna36894\" target=\"_blank\">became dominant in July<\/a>, then consistently accounted for the majority of new Covid infections until last week. But\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a>\u00a0from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published Friday showed that the new subvariants \u2014 called BQ.1.1 and BQ.1 \u2014 have taken over.
