He said the United States is faced with a \u201ctsunami of misinformation and disinformation that is stimulated and kindled by a great deal of divisiveness in the country.\u201d The nation\u2019s leading infectious-disease expert, Anthony S. Fauci \u2014 a public face of the government\u2019s response to the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0pandemic \u2014 is sharing his concern about the toll on his wife and children from abuse by \u201clowlife\u201d trolls. Fauci, 81, who has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, will\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/08\/22\/fauci-retiring\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\">step down\u00a0<\/a>later this month after more than a half-century in public service.
