Wells proposed that monoclonal antibody drugs \u2014 a class of high-price medicines that has transformed the treatment of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7551545\/\" target=\"_blank\">cancer<\/a>\u00a0and autoimmune diseases \u2014 had a role in preventing malaria, a mosquito-borne disease that kills more than a half-million people each year, mostly children in Africa. Scientifically, it was plausible.
