What is XBB.1.5? In the naming convention for SARS-CoV-2 lineages, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/virological.org\/t\/pango-lineage-nomenclature-provisional-rules-for-naming-recombinant-lineages\/657\">prefix \u201cX\u201d denotes a pedigree that arose through genetic recombination<\/a>\u00a0between two or more subvariants. The XBB lineage emerged following natural\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/27-10-2022-tag-ve-statement-on-omicron-sublineages-bq.1-and-xbb\">co-infection of a human host with two Omicron subvariants, namely BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75<\/a>. It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s12291-022-01109-w\">first identified by public health authorities in India during summer 2022<\/a>.
