But don\u2019t worry: The possibility of another global pandemic is never very far off. Avian flu, specifically the H5N1 strain, has spread widely among\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alarming-spread-of-bird-flu-continues-as-more-species-infected\">bird populations and other animals<\/a>\u00a0in the last couple years. More concerning for humans, it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/incredibly-concerning-bird-flu-outbreak-spanish-mink-farm-triggers-pandemic-fears\">tore through a Spanish mink farm<\/a>\u00a0in October \u2014 a disquieting event not only because the virus doesn\u2019t usually spread among mammals, but because minks, who have upper-respiratory tracts similar to humans, are often susceptible to the same kinds of viruses as us. No people were infected during the great mink outbreak of \u201922, but the episode has made many virologists even more nervous than usual. So is avian flu really the next global menace?
