{"id":2504,"date":"2023-02-09T16:14:21","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T22:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=2504"},"modified":"2023-02-09T16:14:22","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T22:14:22","slug":"u-s-to-test-shots-against-bird-flu-outbreak-as-biden-administration-weighs-poultry-vaccinations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/02\/09\/u-s-to-test-shots-against-bird-flu-outbreak-as-biden-administration-weighs-poultry-vaccinations\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. to test shots against bird flu outbreak, as Biden administration weighs poultry vaccinations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bird-flu-outbreak-vaccine-testing-poultry-vaccinations\/\">CBS News<\/a>)  Federal scientists are gearing up to test the first vaccines in poultry against\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-prices-bird-flu-avian-influenza-eggs-chicken-turkey-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\">bird flu<\/a>\u00a0in years, as Biden administration officials say they have now begun weighing an unprecedented shift in the U.S. strategy to counter the growing outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move comes amid mounting concern over the threat posed by the ongoing spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza over the past few years, which has devastated flocks of wild and commercial birds around the continent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A record 58 million birds \u2014 mostly commercially-raised poultry \u2014 have died in the outbreak so far, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/animalhealth\/animal-disease-information\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-2022\/2022-hpai-commercial-backyard-flocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">figures<\/a>&nbsp;tallied by the USDA&#8217;s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service \u2014 either killed by the virus itself or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bird-flu-nebraska-1-8-million-chickens-slaughtered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put down<\/a>&nbsp;in efforts to quash its transmission.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/avian-flu-summary.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Every state<\/a>&nbsp;has detected the virus spreading among wild birds and 47 have spotted them in poultry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The decision to proceed with vaccination is complex, and many factors must be considered before implementing a vaccination strategy,&#8221;&nbsp; USDA spokesperson Mike Stepien said in a statement, adding that the inspection service is discussing the options and &#8220;soliciting input from many different industry stakeholders that would be impacted.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Biden administration has so far not greenlighted the use of vaccines for highly pathogenic avian influenza, several shots had been licensed for potential use in previous outbreaks.
