{"id":2572,"date":"2023-02-14T07:16:49","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T13:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=2572"},"modified":"2023-02-14T07:16:51","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T13:16:51","slug":"what-to-know-about-the-deadly-marburg-virus-as-new-outbreak-emerges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/02\/14\/what-to-know-about-the-deadly-marburg-virus-as-new-outbreak-emerges\/","title":{"rendered":"What to know about the deadly Marburg virus as new outbreak emerges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/02\/14\/marburg-virus-equatorial-guinea\/\">Washington Post<\/a>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadly Marburg virus has surfaced this week for the first time in Equatorial Guinea, causing at least nine deaths in the west African nation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/equatorial-guinea\/news\/equatorial-guinea-confirms-first-ever-marburg-virus-disease-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according&nbsp;<\/a>to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A handful of Marburg cases were identified in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/07\/18\/marburg-virus-disease-ghana-africa-who\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\">Ghana\u00a0<\/a>late last year. Although it remains \u201ca very rare disease in people,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/prevention\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">according\u00a0<\/a>to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, \u201cwhen it occurs, it has the potential to spread,\u201d and can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Marburg virus?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marburg virus disease is a highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according&nbsp;<\/a>to the CDC. It is spawned by the animal-borne RNA virus of the same Filoviridae family as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/08\/15\/ebola-ivory-coast-guinea\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ebola<\/a>&nbsp;virus. Both diseases are rare but have the capacity to cause outbreaks with high fatality rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatality rates for Marburg casesin past outbreaks ranged between 24 percent to 88 percent,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/marburg-virus-disease\/#tab=tab_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according&nbsp;<\/a>to the WHO, depending on the virus strain and quality of case management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marburg was probably first transmitted to people from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/exposure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">African fruit bats<\/a>&nbsp;as a result of prolonged exposure from people working in mines and caves that have Rousettus bat colonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not an airborne disease. Instead, it spreads quickly between humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people such as blood, saliva or urine, as well as on surfaces and materials. Relatives and health workers remain most vulnerable alongside patients, and bodies can remain contagious even at burial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was first recognized in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/outbreaks\/chronology.html\" target=\"_blank\">1967<\/a>, when outbreaks occurred among laboratory workers in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany and in Belgrade, Serbia while conducting research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are symptoms of the Marburg virus?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/02\/14\/marburg-virus-equatorial-guinea\/#secondary-nav\">Return to menu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms can begin to show up \u201cabruptly,\u201d according to the WHO, and include a high fever, severe headache, chills and malaise. Muscle aches and cramping pains are common symptoms. Others can include jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC has also noted that around day five, a non-itchy rash on the chest, back or stomach can occur. Clinical diagnosis of Marburg \u201ccan be difficult,\u201d it says, with many of the symptoms similar to other infectious diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever and Ebola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fatal cases, death usually occurs between eight and nine days after onset of the disease and is generally preceded by severe blood loss and hemorrhaging, as well as multi-organ dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appearance of patients can be described as \u201cghost-like,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/marburg-virus-disease\" target=\"_blank\">says\u00a0<\/a>the WHO, with drawn features, deep-set eyes, expressionless faces and extreme lethargy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the treatment for Marburg virus?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat the Marburg virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supportive care can improve survival rates, such as rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids, maintaining oxygen levels, using drug therapies and treating specific symptoms as they arise. Some health experts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/marburg-virus-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">say&nbsp;<\/a>drugs similar to those used for Ebola could be effectivebut treatments have not been proven in clinical trials. Increasing awareness of its contagious nature can also help with prevention and spread,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/prevention\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says&nbsp;<\/a>the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some \u201cexperimental treatments\u201d for Marburg have been tested in animals but not in humans, the CDC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the latest Marburg virus disease outbreak?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Equatorial Guinea confirmed its first outbreak of Marburg virus disease this week. At least nine people have died and there are 16 suspected cases in the country\u2019s western Kie-Ntem province, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFurther investigations are ongoing. Advance teams have been deployed in the affected districts to trace contacts, isolate and provide medical care to people showing symptoms of the disease,\u201d the global health body said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/equatorial-guinea\/news\/equatorial-guinea-confirms-first-ever-marburg-virus-disease-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement&nbsp;<\/a>Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cases of Marburg have previously been reported elsewhere in Africa,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/outbreaks\/chronology.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a>&nbsp;in Uganda, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2018\/12\/20\/deadly-marburg-virus-found-bats-sierra-leone\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sierra Leone<\/a>&nbsp;and South Africa. The largest outbreak killed more than 350 people in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7130051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Angola<\/a>&nbsp;in 2005, according to a report from its Health Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe virus is not known to be native to other continents, such as North America,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vhf\/marburg\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">says\u00a0<\/a>the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What has the WHO said about the Marburg virus?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/events\/detail\/2023\/02\/14\/default-calendar\/who-urgent-marburg-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convening<\/a>&nbsp;an \u201curgent meeting\u201d Tuesday to discuss the newly identified Marburg outbreak in Equatorial Guinea as well as vaccine and therapeutic candidates, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will also be deploying teams to the affected areas and assigning experts in epidemiology, case management, infection prevention, laboratory and risk communication to support the national response efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMarburg is highly infectious,\u201d said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa. \u201cThanks to the rapid and decisive action by the Equatorial Guinean authorities in confirming the disease, emergency response can get to full steam quickly so that we save lives and halt the virus as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Washington Post) The deadly Marburg virus has surfaced this week for the first time in Equatorial Guinea, causing at least nine deaths in the west African nation,&nbsp;according&nbsp;to the World Health Organization.
