{"id":2837,"date":"2023-03-14T16:28:55","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T21:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=2837"},"modified":"2023-03-14T16:28:58","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T21:28:58","slug":"michigan-highly-contagious-bird-flu-found-in-backyard-flock-of-eaton-county-chickens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/03\/14\/michigan-highly-contagious-bird-flu-found-in-backyard-flock-of-eaton-county-chickens\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan: Highly contagious bird flu found in backyard flock of Eaton County chickens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lansingstatejournal.com\/story\/news\/2023\/03\/13\/highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-bird-flu-hpai-found-eaton-county-chickens\/70004008007\/\">Lansing State Journal<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts have detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard poultry flock in Eaton County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the first detection of the virus in domestic birds in Eaton County and the first time HPAI has been confirmed in a Michigan domestic poultry flock since early December, officials with the state Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But agency officials said it&#8217;s a reminder the virus is still present and that bird owners need to remain vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While there has not been a detection of HPAI in a Michigan domestic flock since December 2022, the virus has continued to circulate in wild birds,&#8221; state Veterinarian Nora Wineland said in a news release. &#8220;As these birds migrate this spring, their movement increases the risk of disease spread.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eaton is the 16th Michigan county where HPAI has been detected in non-commercial poultry flocks. The Eaton County flock of about 15 chickens was &#8220;depopulated&#8221; and the premises quarantined to prevent spreading the virus, MDARD staff said. The agency didn&#8217;t disclose the specific location of affected properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virus was detected in backyard flocks<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lansingstatejournal.com\/story\/news\/2022\/09\/13\/bird-flu-discovered-ingham-county-backyard-poultry-flock\/69492870007\/\">&nbsp;in Ingham County<\/a>&nbsp;last September and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lansingstatejournal.com\/story\/news\/local\/2022\/04\/15\/bird-flu-michigan-found-in-livingston-county-backyard-flock\/7335568001\/\">in Livingston County<\/a>&nbsp;last April.<\/p>\n<!-- <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\" ZpdiDIa P TjSFVtEgN nwRH zTb\"> ZpdiDIa P TjSFVtEgN nwRH zTb<\/a> --><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lansing State Journal Experts have detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard poultry flock in Eaton County.
