{"id":3237,"date":"2023-04-18T10:48:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T15:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3237"},"modified":"2023-04-18T10:48:06","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T15:48:06","slug":"bird-flu-kills-thousands-of-waterbirds-in-west-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/04\/18\/bird-flu-kills-thousands-of-waterbirds-in-west-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu kills thousands of waterbirds in West Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdguides.com\/news\/bird-flu-kills-thousands-of-waterbirds-in-west-africa\/\">Bird Guides<\/a> Thousands of waterbirds have reportedly\u00a0died in Senegal and The Gambia in recent weeks as both countries are hit hard by an outbreak of bird flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza; HPAI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,700 birds have been reported as killed by the virus in Senegal, where the victims have included\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdguides.com\/species\/redirect\/23067\" target=\"_blank\">Great White Pelicans<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdguides.com\/species\/redirect\/23152\" target=\"_blank\">Great Cormorants<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdguides.com\/species\/redirect\/25169\" target=\"_blank\">Grey-headed Gulls<\/a>\u00a0and various tern species, including\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdguides.com\/species\/redirect\/25270\" target=\"_blank\">West African Crested Tern<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, HPAI has been confirmed in The Gambia following the testing of corpses collected at&nbsp;Tanji Bird Reserve.
