Some countries, such as Aotearoa (New Zealand)<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-023-02340-5#ref-CR1\">1<\/a><\/sup>, were able to successfully adapt national pandemic influenza plans to the response to COVID-19, and global influenza surveillance systems were harnessed for SARS-CoV-2 (ref.\u00a0<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-023-02340-5#ref-CR2\">2<\/a><\/sup>). It is now critical that nations and the international community implement lessons learned from COVID-19 back into influenza preparedness<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-023-02340-5#ref-CR3\">3<\/a><\/sup>.
