Health authorities in Mozambique<\/strong> are battling the most severe cholera<\/strong> outbreak in the country in more than 20<\/strong> years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of cases of cholera<\/strong> increased after the country was hit by Cyclone Freddy<\/strong> in late February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coastal town of Quelimane<\/strong> in northern Mozambique became a cholera hotspot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Quelimane<\/strong> is a low-lying city. It’s a swamp. So the water tables are very high, so sewage and water will all mix. So that also brought a challenge in terms of trying to combat cholera, and people were fetching water from these contaminated water sources”, said Michael Chimedza<\/strong>, chief, Field Office, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, the World Health Organization<\/strong>, the United Nations<\/strong> and Doctors Without Borders<\/strong> were treating more than 400<\/strong> cases a day. The numbers have since come down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The beds were not enough because the number was very, very, high. This is a case of success. We had below 20<\/strong> cases in the last two<\/strong> weeks. It means in one month we went from out-of-control cholera<\/strong> outbreak, it became under control. It was not easy. I was working more than 18 hours per day”, admitted Carlos Mafigo<\/strong>, health and nutrition specialist, UNICEF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mass vaccination drives and community outreach programs, particularly targeted at pregnant women<\/strong>, have played a part in stemming new infections.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
