{"id":3628,"date":"2023-05-22T20:39:23","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T01:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3628"},"modified":"2023-05-22T20:39:26","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T01:39:26","slug":"chinas-new-covid-wave-set-to-see-65-million-cases-a-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/05\/22\/chinas-new-covid-wave-set-to-see-65-million-cases-a-week\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s New Covid Wave Set to See 65 Million Cases a Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-22\/china-s-new-covid-wave-set-to-see-65-million-cases-a-week\">Bloomberg <\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China is likely to see its Covid-19 wave peaking at about 65 million infections a week toward the end of June, according to a senior health adviser, while authorities rush to bolster their vaccine arsenal to target the latest omicron variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>XBB has been fueling a resurgence in cases across China since late April and is expected to result in 40 million infections a week by the end of May, before peaking at 65 million a month later, local media outlet the Paper&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaper.cn\/newsDetail_forward_23176633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Monday, citing a presentation by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a biotech conference in the southern city of Guangzhou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His estimate provides rare insight into how the much anticipated second wave may play out, with immunity among the country\u2019s 1.4 billion residents waning nearly six months after Beijing\u2019s sudden dismantling of Covid Zero curbs saw coronavirus run rampant. Back then, a different omicron sublineage probably infected\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-23\/china-estimates-covid-surge-is-infecting-37-million-people-a-day\" target=\"_blank\">37 million people<\/a>\u00a0every day, sending residents scrambling for limited supplies of fever medicine, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China is also preparing to roll out new vaccines that will target XBB. The country\u2019s drug regulator has already given preliminary approval to two and another three or four \u201cwill be cleared soon\u201d, Zhong said. \u201cWe can lead the pack internationally in developing more effective vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The batch of XBB-specific vaccines will also add to a growing number of homegrown immunizations Beijing has signed off throughout the pandemic, and is in line with a recommendation from an expert panel at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/0751538D:SW\">World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0last week to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-18\/who-vaccine-panel-backs-using-xbb-strain-in-updated-covid-shots\" target=\"_blank\">move away<\/a>\u00a0from using the original Wuhan strain in future shots.
