{"id":3790,"date":"2023-06-06T20:34:06","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T01:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3790"},"modified":"2023-06-06T20:34:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T01:34:31","slug":"tanzania-declares-end-of-deadly-marburg-virus-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/06\/06\/tanzania-declares-end-of-deadly-marburg-virus-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanzania Declares End of Deadly Marburg Virus Outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/who-tanzania-declares-end-of-deadly-marburg-virus-outbreak\/7121361.html\">VOA<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanzania on Friday declared the end of a deadly outbreak of the Marburg virus, more than two months after it was first confirmed, the World Health Organization said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine cases &#8211; eight confirmed and one probable &#8211; and six deaths were recorded in the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in the northwestern region of Kagera, the WHO said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.N. health agency said it was the first such outbreak in Tanzania, an East African country with a population of almost 62 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last confirmed case tested negative on April 19, setting off the 42-day mandatory countdown to declare the end of the outbreak, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neighboring Uganda, which witnessed its last outbreak in 2017 and shares a porous border with Tanzania, had gone on high alert after Marburg was confirmed by Tanzania&#8217;s health ministry on March 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda had just emerged in January from an almost four-month-long Ebola outbreak, which killed 55 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO said Tanzania&#8217;s health authorities, with help from the U.N. agency and other partners, had &#8220;immediately rolled out outbreak response to stop the spread of the virus and save lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marburg virus is a highly virulent microbe that causes severe fever, often accompanied by bleeding and organ failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/who-tanzania-declares-end-of-deadly-marburg-virus-outbreak\/7121361.html\">Continue Reading<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOA Tanzania on Friday declared the end of a deadly outbreak of the Marburg virus, more than two months after it was first confirmed, the World Health Organization said.
