{"id":3911,"date":"2023-06-20T14:10:52","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T19:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3911"},"modified":"2023-06-20T14:11:23","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T19:11:23","slug":"meta-is-rolling-back-its-covid-19-misinformation-rules-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/06\/20\/meta-is-rolling-back-its-covid-19-misinformation-rules-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta is rolling back its covid-19 misinformation rules in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/17\/23764429\/meta-covid-misinformation-rules-facebook-instagram\">The Verge<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta is rolling back its covid misinformation rules in countries like the US, where the pandemic\u2019s national emergency status has been rescinded as recommended by its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/20\/23690853\/meta-oversight-board-report-investigation-covid-amplifying-misinformation\">independent oversight board<\/a>&nbsp;in April of this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/06\/16\/meta-rolls-back-covid-misinformation-rules\/\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported Friday morning (via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/meta-rolls-back-covid-19-misinformation-rules-in-many-countries-174746077.html?src=rss\"><em>Engadget<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2022\/07\/oversight-board-advise-covid-19-misinformation-measures\/\">update<\/a>\u00a0to the July announcement that it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/27\/23280404\/facebook-instagram-covid-antivax-misinformation-oversight-board-review\">asked the Meta Oversight Board<\/a>\u00a0to investigate the safety of doing so, Meta cited the end of the World Health Organization\u2019s global public health emergency declaration as the reason for the change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the company says it will be tailoring its rules by region. In its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.fb.com\/oversight\/oversight-board-cases\/pao-on-COVID-19-misinformation\">transparency center<\/a>&nbsp;page considering the board\u2019s recommendations, Meta says that, because the WHO has downgraded the pandemic\u2019s emergency status, it won\u2019t be directly addressing some of the concerns from the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those concerns is advice that Meta reassess what misinformation it removes and take steps to increase transparency about government requests to remove covid content. Instead, Meta says its response to the board\u2019s fourth recommendation \u2014 that the company create a process to determine the risk of its misinformation moderation policies \u2014 addresses the spirit of the first recommendation.
