{"id":3935,"date":"2023-06-20T21:08:16","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T02:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3935"},"modified":"2023-06-20T21:08:34","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T02:08:34","slug":"fda-asks-drugmakers-to-update-covid-boosters-to-target-xbb-1-5-for-the-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/06\/20\/fda-asks-drugmakers-to-update-covid-boosters-to-target-xbb-1-5-for-the-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA asks drugmakers to update Covid boosters to target XBB.1.5 for the fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/covid-boosters-fda-panel-recommends-new-xbb-shots-fall-rcna89331\">NBC<\/a> The updated shots are expected to be distributed as early as September as part of a fall booster campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/updated-covid-19-vaccines-use-united-states-beginning-fall-2023?source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Friday that it was advising drugmakers to update the Covid booster shots to target XBB.1.5, the predominant coronavirus strain in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement came a day after an advisory committee recommended updating the Covid vaccines to target a circulating strain of the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA\u2019s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee on Thursday voted unanimously in support of tweaking the shots to target an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/xbb15-subvariant-cdc-reports-new-omicron-strain-taking-rcna63512\">XBB strain<\/a>, as well as dropping the original coronavirus strain from the formulation. During the meeting, the committee did not make a formal recommendation about which specific XBB lineage to include, though in a discussion after the vote, members expressed a preference for XBB.1.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Based on the totality of the evidence, FDA has advised manufacturers who will be updating their Covid-19 vaccines, that they should develop vaccines with a monovalent XBB 1.5 composition,&#8221; the FDA wrote in a release published online Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugmakers need enough time to produce and distribute the new shots, which are expected to be used as early as September as part of a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>fall booster campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pfizer said it could distribute reformulated doses as early as the end of July, depending on the strain selected. Moderna said it expects to begin shipping updated doses, pending FDA approval, \u201cby the end of the summer.\u201d Novavax said it could have updated doses available in the fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s still unclear whether the fall is the best time to offer boosters. Covid\u2019s spread has often been erratic over the past three years, without the clear seasonality seen with viruses like the flu.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis season will be very telling whether Covid settles into a seasonal pattern or not,\u201d Ruth Link-Gelles, a senior epidemiologist at the CDC, said during Thursday&#8217;s meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>XBB.1.5 accounts for about 40% of all new Covid cases as of Saturday,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-summary\" target=\"_blank\">according to the CDC<\/a>. It\u2019s followed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/covid-variant-arcturus-spreading-know-xbb116-rcna81572\">XBB.1.16\u00a0<\/a>(also called \u201cArcturus\u201d on social media) and XBB.1.9.1.
