{"id":3969,"date":"2023-06-27T20:25:17","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T01:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=3969"},"modified":"2023-06-27T20:29:27","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T01:29:27","slug":"texas-am-expert-testifies-on-preparing-for-future-public-health-threats-and-disasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/06\/27\/texas-am-expert-testifies-on-preparing-for-future-public-health-threats-and-disasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas A&amp;M Expert Testifies On Preparing For Future Public Health Threats And Disasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/today.tamu.edu\/2023\/06\/27\/texas-am-expert-testifies-on-preparing-for-future-public-health-threats-and-disasters\/\">Texas A&amp;M<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/person\/6829\">Dr. Gerald Parker<\/a>, Texas A&amp;M University\u2019s associate dean for Global One Health at the School of Veterinary Medicine &amp; Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) and director of the Pandemic &amp; Biosecurity Policy Program, recently testified before the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/committees\/subcommittee\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health<\/a>&nbsp;on the importance of being prepared for emerging threats and disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subcommittee, which includes Reps. Michael Burgess and Dan Crenshaw of Texas, discussed the reauthorization for the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) along with a number of public health-related bills. PAHPA was first signed into law in 2006 to provide the federal government with the authority to prepare and quickly respond to emergencies, such as Hurricane Katrina, the emergence of H5NI (avian influenza A), and other public health emergencies, whether deliberate, accidental, or natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PAHPA has been reauthorized twice since 2006, with the current authorization set to expire in September.
