{"id":4083,"date":"2023-07-11T16:29:16","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T21:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4083"},"modified":"2023-07-11T16:29:19","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T21:29:19","slug":"deer-spread-covid-to-humans-multiple-times-researchers-find","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/07\/11\/deer-spread-covid-to-humans-multiple-times-researchers-find\/","title":{"rendered":"Deer spread COVID to humans multiple times, researchers find"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-19-spread-from-deer\/\">CBS News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans have transmitted COVID-19 to wild deer hundreds of times, an analysis of thousands of samples collected from the animals revealed, and people have also caught and spread mutated variants&nbsp;from deer at least three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-39782-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published Monday<\/a>&nbsp;stems from the first year of a multiyear federal effort to study the virus as it has spread into American wildlife, spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists analyzed 8,830 samples collected from wild white-tailed deer across 26 states and Washington, D.C., from November 2021 to April 2022, to study the COVID variants that had infected 282 of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparing sequences from the viruses in deer against other publicly reported samples from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/sars-cov-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">databases of human infections<\/a>&nbsp;around the world, they were able to trace the likely spread of these variants between humans and animals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 109 &#8220;independent spillover events&#8221; were identified, matching viruses spotted in deer to predecessors it likely descended from in previously infected humans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CBS News Americans have transmitted COVID-19 to wild deer hundreds of times, an analysis of thousands of samples collected from the animals revealed, and people have also caught and spread mutated variants&nbsp;from deer at least three times.
