{"id":4127,"date":"2023-07-18T12:40:29","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T17:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4127"},"modified":"2023-07-18T12:55:11","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T17:55:11","slug":"uk-bird-flu-investigation-after-bempton-cliffs-seabird-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/07\/18\/uk-bird-flu-investigation-after-bempton-cliffs-seabird-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"UK: Bird flu investigation after Bempton Cliffs seabird deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-humber-66236555\">BBC<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An investigation has begun after a number of birds were found dead at a nature reserve in East Yorkshire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RSPB said in a social media post that the fatalities at its site at Bempton Cliffs were being investigated for any possible link to avian flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charity said that kittiwakes seemed to be particularly affected with many found dead &#8220;on the cliffs and sea&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the site would remain open to the public, but warned people not to touch any dead birds they found. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site north of Bridlington is home to about 500,000 sea birds during the breeding season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RSPB said many of the birds were leaving their nests as the newly- hatched young flew off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While it is worrying, the birds affected are in a localised area,&#8221; the charity said in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is hoped that the majority of the birds will leave the cliffs before the impact worsens.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has been informed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC An investigation has begun after a number of birds were found dead at a nature reserve in East Yorkshire.
