{"id":4137,"date":"2023-07-18T16:23:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T21:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4137"},"modified":"2023-07-18T19:21:51","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T00:21:51","slug":"new-malaria-case-in-florida-brings-national-total-to-8-the-first-u-s-acquired-cases-in-20-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/07\/18\/new-malaria-case-in-florida-brings-national-total-to-8-the-first-u-s-acquired-cases-in-20-years\/","title":{"rendered":"New malaria case in Florida brings national total to 8, the first U.S. acquired cases in 20 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/new-malaria-case-florida-brings-national-total-8-first-us-cases-20-yea-rcna94899\">NBC News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida health officials&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/mosquito-borne-diseases\/_documents\/2023-week28-arbovirus-surveillance-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/more-malaria-cases-florida-symptoms-treatment-doctor-rcna93123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">case of malaria<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday, bringing the total number of locally acquired malaria infections in the U.S. to eight since May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cases are the first in 20 years to be acquired in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2023\/han00494.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said last month<\/a>&nbsp;that locally acquired infections \u2014 those not linked to travel outside the country \u2014 constitute a public health emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newest case was identified last week in Sarasota County, where all seven of Florida&#8217;s cases have been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Texas Department of State Health Services&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/news-alerts\/health-advisory-locally-acquired-malaria-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;another case of locally acquired malaria in June, which was not connected to the Florida ones. The Texas patient, who was working for the National Guard along the Rio Grande when he developed symptoms, said he was initially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/us-malaria-patient-says-disease-was-initially-misdiagnosed-rcna92142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misdiagnosed with a viral infection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaria&nbsp;is a serious, sometimes fatal, disease caused by a parasite that\u2019s usually transferred to humans through the bites of female&nbsp;<em>Anopheles<\/em>&nbsp;mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and fatigue.&nbsp;Some patients also experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC.
