{"id":4161,"date":"2023-07-18T21:24:45","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T02:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4161"},"modified":"2023-07-18T21:24:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T02:24:49","slug":"snail-racing-world-championships-make-post-pandemic-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/07\/18\/snail-racing-world-championships-make-post-pandemic-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Snail Racing World Championships make post-pandemic return"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>A snail racing event making its return this weekend in England has been awarded a Guinness World Record as the longest running humane snail-racing world championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Snail Racing World Championships in Congham, England, are<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/snailracing.world\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0returning Saturday<\/a>\u00a0after being suspended in 2020 due to the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/COVID-19\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was founded by Tom Elwes in the 1960s after he attended a snail racing event in France.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Guinness_World_Records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guinness World Records<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnnews.co.uk\/news\/snail-race-recognised-in-guinness-world-records-9320549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has now named the annual event<\/a>&nbsp;the longest running humane snail-racing world championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The race features snails attempting to cover a distance of 13 inches.
