{"id":4227,"date":"2023-08-01T15:11:18","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T20:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4227"},"modified":"2023-08-01T15:11:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T20:11:36","slug":"the-cdc-sees-signs-of-a-late-summer-covid-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/08\/01\/the-cdc-sees-signs-of-a-late-summer-covid-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"The CDC sees signs of a late summer COVID wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2023\/07\/28\/1190443473\/the-cdc-sees-signs-of-a-late-summer-covid-wave\">NPR<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet another summer COVID-19 wave may have started in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After roughly six, seven months of steady declines, things are starting to tick back up again,&#8221; Dr.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/eis\/field-epi-manual\/Contributors.html\">Brendan Jackson<\/a>, the CDC&#8217;s COVID-19 incident manager, tells NPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of coronavirus being detected in wastewater, the percentage of people testing positive for the virus and the number of people seeking care for COVID-19 at emergency rooms all started increasing in early July, Jackson says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen the early indicators go up for the past several weeks, and just this week for the first time in a long time we&#8217;ve seen hospitalizations tick up as well,&#8221; Jackson says. &#8220;This could be the start of a late summer wave.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitalizations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\">jumped 10%<\/a>&nbsp;to 7,109 for the week ending July 15, from 6,444 the previous week, according to the latest CDC data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increases vary around the country, with the virus appearing to be spreading the most in the southeast and the least in the Midwest, Jackson says.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NPR Yet another summer COVID-19 wave may have started in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. &#8220;After roughly six, seven months of steady declines, things are starting to tick back up again,&#8221; Dr.&nbsp;Brendan Jackson, the CDC&#8217;s COVID-19 incident manager, tells NPR.
