With the advent of successful vaccinations and better social management, however, it has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/08\/07\/covid-cases-rising-free-testing-limited\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waned<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, over 1 million new covid-19 cases and more than 3,100 deaths were reported in the 28 days up to Aug. 3, according to the latest World Health Organization&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/weekly-epidemiological-update-on-covid-19---3-august-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report&nbsp;<\/a>\u2014 bringing the death toll to almost 7 million since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attention of public health experts around the world is being piqued by a new subvariant, known as EG.5, which is becoming a dominant strain in countries including the United States and Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what we know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the EG.5 coronavirus variant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/08\/08\/eris-covid-variant-eg-5-omicron\/#secondary-nav\">Return to menu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EG.5 coronavirus is a subvariant and descendant of omicron \u2014 which remains the world\u2019s most prevalent coronavirus strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EG.5 has narrowly surpassed other omicron descendants circulating in the United States and now accounts for the largest proportion of covid cases nationwide,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-summary\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter users and some media outlets have unofficially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRyanGregory\/status\/1686433961856163840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nicknamed&nbsp;<\/a>the subvariant \u201cEris\u201d in keeping with Greek nomenclature, but this name is not used officially by the WHO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All viruses evolve and change over time. In its latest update, the WHO&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/activities\/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designated&nbsp;<\/a>EG.5, which includes a similar EG.5.1 strain, as one of its \u201cvariants under monitoring,\u201d so it is not yet a variant of interest or concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virologist and researcher Stuart Turville, an associate professor at Sydney\u2019s University of New South Wales, called the EG.5 variant \u201ca little bit more slippery\u201d and \u201ccompetitive\u201d than its counterparts, able to \u201cnavigate better the presence of antibodies\u201d produced by vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is, however, only incrementally different from other subvariants, having evolved slightly to \u201cgive it a better ability to engage and enter cells a little bit better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/08\/08\/eris-covid-variant-eg-5-omicron\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\" sR smlOhGjJ\"><!--  sR smlOhGjJ --><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post The coronavirus has not disappeared.
