Not anymore."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-symptoms-loss-of-smell-taste-less-common-omicron-study\/\">CBS News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a hallmark sign of many COVID-19 cases \u2014 sometimes more reliable than even flu-like symptoms at sniffing out people infected by the virus&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-taste-smell-covid-19-indicator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early in the pandemic<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 was the sudden loss of smell and taste. But growing research suggests this symptom has become far less common, with only a small fraction of new patients reporting it last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings come from analysis of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncats.nih.gov\/n3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sweeping dataset<\/a>&nbsp;of medical records gathered by the National Institutes of Health for COVID-19 researchers from around the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the past, people were quite aware, if they had a cold and they lost their sense of smell, that they potentially had COVID. Whereas now, you really can&#8217;t tell,&#8221; Dr. Evan Reiter, medical director of VCU Health&#8217;s Smell and Taste Disorders Center, told CBS News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reiter led the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vcu.edu\/article\/2023\/06\/risk-of-smell-loss-from-covid-19-is-as-low-as-6-compared-with-initial-variants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, which was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aao-hnsfjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1002\/ohn.384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;in May in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, examining odds of patients with COVID-19 also reporting loss of smell and taste.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the symptoms known as chemosensory loss occurred in an estimated 50% of cases early in the pandemic, the latest research suggests a prevalence of just 3% to 4% in more recent Omicron waves.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study is among the latest to illustrate how the symptoms inflicted by the virus have changed, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-variant-eg-5-now-eris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new variants<\/a>&nbsp;have emerged and immunity from infections and prior vaccinations offer defenses that early patients lacked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from University College London reported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-38869-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a study<\/a>&nbsp;out last week that the proportion of cases reporting loss of taste or smell had significantly decreased after the Omicron strain emerged in 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more variants of concern emerged, &#8220;SARS-CoV-2 symptomatology gradually resembled that of other respiratory symptoms.
