{"id":4355,"date":"2023-08-15T19:53:54","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T00:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4355"},"modified":"2023-08-15T20:07:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T01:07:26","slug":"youtube-announces-new-policies-to-target-medical-misinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/08\/15\/youtube-announces-new-policies-to-target-medical-misinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"YouTube announces new policies to target medical misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/4153540-youtube-announces-new-policies-to-target-medical-misinformation\/\">The Hill<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube on Tuesday announced it is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/inside-youtube\/a-long-term-vision-for-medical-misinformation-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creating a new framework<\/a>&nbsp;to crack down on medical misinformation on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the years since we began our efforts to make YouTube a destination for high-quality health content, we\u2019ve learned critical lessons about developing Community Guidelines in line with local and global health authority guidance on topics that pose serious real-world risks, such as misinformation on COVID-19, vaccines, reproductive health, harmful substances, and more,\u201d a blog post from the video-sharing site read. \u201cWe\u2019re taking what we\u2019ve learned so far about the most effective ways to tackle medical misinformation to simplify our approach for creators, viewers, and partners.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform has faced controversy in recent years&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/enrichment\/arts-culture\/3625989-youtube-more-likely-to-recommend-election-fraud-content-to-those-skeptical-of-the-2020-election-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">for its algorithm<\/a>&nbsp;and the way it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/538604-youtube-still-pushing-white-supremacist-videos-report\/\">can direct viewers<\/a>&nbsp;to misleading and extremist content. In 2021, YouTube said it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/569344-youtube-removed-over-1m-dangerous-coronavirus-information-videos\/\">removed more than 1 million videos<\/a>&nbsp;related to \u201cdangerous coronavirus information\u201d since the beginning of the outbreak in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube said it will use three categories, \u201cPrevention, Treatment and Denial\u201d to sort the kinds of medical misinformation on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will remove content that contradicts guidance from health authorities on the prevention and transmission of certain conditions, including vaccines.
