Doctors Are Struggling to Understand Why"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6309054\/long-covid-recovery-rare\/\">Time Magazine<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since August 2020, David Putrino, director of rehabilitation innovation at New York\u2019s Mount Sinai Health System, has helped treat more than 3,000&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6260071\/long-covid-health-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\">people with Long COVID<\/a>. These patients, in his experience, fit into one of three groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small number, no more than 10%, have stubborn symptoms that don\u2019t get better, no matter what Putrino and his team try. A big chunk see some improvement, but remain sick. And about 15% to 20% report\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6072264\/long-covid-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\">full recovery<\/a>\u2014an elusive benchmark that Putrino greets with cautious optimism. \u201cI call it \u2018fully recovered for now,\u2019\u201d Putrino says, since lots of people\u2019s symptoms eventually come back, sometimes if they\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6196814\/covid-19-reinfections-omicron-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\">catch COVID-19 again<\/a>, which can land them back at square one. Putrino\u2019s outlook isn\u2019t purposely gloomy; it\u2019s one informed by the difficult realities of treating Long COVID, a condition with no known cure and is defined by long-lasting symptoms following a case of COVID-19. More than 200 symptoms are associated with Long COVID, commonly including fatigue, cognitive dysfunction,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6215346\/covid-19-rest-helps\/\" target=\"_blank\">intolerance to exercise<\/a>, chronic pain, and more.
