{"id":4545,"date":"2023-09-05T19:11:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T00:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4545"},"modified":"2023-09-05T19:31:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T00:31:56","slug":"what-to-know-about-covid-the-flu-and-rsv-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/09\/05\/what-to-know-about-covid-the-flu-and-rsv-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"What to know about COVID, the flu and RSV this fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2023\/09\/05\/covid-flu-rsv-vaccines-2023-triple-threat\">Axios<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s happening:<\/strong>&nbsp;A potent flu virus,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2023\/08\/18\/covid-colorado-hospitalizations-cases\">resurgent COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;and rebounding RSV are combining to prompt new warnings in Colorado about the coming seasons when all three will be circulating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Based on case rates in Australia,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/covid-vaccines-2023-2024-coming-this-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UCHealth experts<\/a>&nbsp;are predicting higher-than-average rates here for all three viruses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And flu season is arriving early.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What they&#8217;re saying:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;This is why we&#8217;re encouraging everyone, and especially kids, parents and grandparents, to get their vaccinations early,&#8221; Michelle Barron, the senior medical director of infection prevention and control at UCHealth, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Of note:&nbsp;<\/strong>UCHealth reported admitting two patients to the hospital for flu in the past week and counted additional cases at outpatient clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to know:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/07\/06\/tripledemic-covid-vaccines\">Vaccines for all three<\/a>&nbsp;are now available or coming soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Flu: Vaccine available.&nbsp;<\/strong>The virus is expected to circulate widely in October and peak in November, at least a month earlier than normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The CDC recommends everyone older than six months get vaccinated and reports that those immunized were 40-70% less likely to be hospitalized or experience complications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) RSV: Vaccine available.<\/strong>&nbsp;The FDA recently approved new vaccines targeted at older adults and others who are immunocompromised, as well as those 8-19 months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) COVID:<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Vaccine coming soon.<\/strong>&nbsp;Federal officials anticipate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/08\/25\/biden-vaccines-september-covid\">updated COVID-19 vaccines<\/a>&nbsp;will become available to all Americans in mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The new doses target the XBB.1.5 Omicron variant, the dominant summer strain, but experts say they will still protect &#8220;against the most serious outcomes&#8221; of the newer variants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"Xt NtrblDOQoCA n PSX hXAI Qm\">Xt NtrblDOQoCA n PSX hXAI Qm<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Axios What&#8217;s happening:&nbsp;A potent flu virus,&nbsp;resurgent COVID-19&nbsp;and rebounding RSV are combining to prompt new warnings in Colorado about the coming seasons when all three will be circulating.
