{"id":4564,"date":"2023-09-05T20:28:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T01:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4564"},"modified":"2023-09-05T21:29:50","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T02:29:50","slug":"cdc-alerts-doctors-to-an-increase-in-rsv-cases-among-young-children-and-babies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/09\/05\/cdc-alerts-doctors-to-an-increase-in-rsv-cases-among-young-children-and-babies\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC alerts doctors to an increase in RSV cases among young children and babies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/rsv-cdc-warns-cases-rising-babies-rcna103521\">NBC News<\/a> Cases of the respiratory illness are ticking up in Florida and Georgia, the CDC said Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted doctors Tuesday about a<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>rise in severe cases of RSV among young children in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/respiratory-illness\/respiratory-syncytial-virus\/_documents\/2023-w34rsv-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florida&nbsp;<\/a>and Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional increases have usually predicted the beginning of RSV season nationally, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2023\/han00498.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC wrote in its advisory<\/a>, &#8220;with increased RSV activity spreading north and west over the following 2\u20133 months.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late-summer increase appears to suggest that RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is once again falling into a typical seasonal pattern after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/viruses-are-landing-kids-icu-summer-it-s-not-all-n1274355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several years of unusually early viral activity<\/a>&nbsp;due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Aug. 5 through Aug. 19, the rate of RSV-related hospitalizations increased from 2 in 100,000 kids ages 4 and younger, to 7 per 100,000, the CDC reported.
