Photos of positive test results are popping up on social media feeds. Hospitalizations are increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from the start of a sensational new chapter in the pandemic, experts say this uptick is the new normal in a world with covid as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2022\/01\/20\/what-does-endemic-mean\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endemic<\/a>&nbsp;disease.Now, withsome level of immunity nearly ubiquitous across the country, many people are wondering when \u2014 or if \u2014 we can stop treating the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;differently from other common respiratory ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say the answer will vary, depending on people\u2019s individual tolerance for risk and the changing landscape of variants and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/09\/12\/covid-booster-shots-2023-cdc\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boosters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covid is still a leading cause of death. Doctors have little to offer people who are stricken by the constellation of lingering symptoms known as long covid. Vigilance is still required to protect high-risk people, including those who are older or who have compromised immune systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some, covid will never stop being special, and worries mount as they watch more people drop the precautions that help keep vulnerable individuals safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe newer people [just diagnosed] with long covid are really angry,\u201d said Hannah Davis, a co-founder of the Patient-Led Research Collaborative, who has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/08\/21\/long-covid-lingering-effects-two-years-later\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;long covid<\/a>. \u201cEveryone\u2019s been told the pandemic is basically over, the risk is basically over if you are vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many public health experts also point out that there is a middle ground between living in fear of the virus and ignoring its existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/09\/13\/covid-new-normal-endemic\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post New&nbsp;coronavirus variants&nbsp;are making headlines.
