It\u2019s Fat Bear Week, a pure and wonderful treat for people who need a break from the harsh realities of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition champions the brown bears of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/katm\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Katmai National Park and Preserve<\/a>\u00a0as they complete their transformations from scrawny to elephantine for hibernation. With the internet watching via live\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/explore.org\/livecams\/brown-bears\/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks-falls\" target=\"_blank\">Bear Cams<\/a>, the contestants go beast mode on the millions of sockeye salmon that run from Bristol Bay down the Brooks River. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it\u2019s up to voters to interpret the \u201cfattest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no real set criteria that you\u2019re supposed to vote on,\u201d said Mike Fitz, a resident naturalist with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/explore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Explore.org<\/a>\u00a0who started the competition in 2014. \u201cYou could vote on just simply the largest bear, or look at relative fatness or consider the extenuating circumstances of each bear\u2019s life like the challenges of raising offspring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Fat Bear Week?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of Fat Bear Week as a March Madness meets Nathan\u2019s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, but for a bracket of 12 brown bears in southwest Alaska\u2019s remote Katmai National Park and Preserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a single-elimination tournament where fans vote online for their favorite contenders as they finish beefing up for winter hibernation. The last two units battle in the finals (on the internet, not real life) for the title of Fattest Bear on Fat Bear Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the larger goal of Fat Bear Week is to promote conservation efforts to preserve places like Katmai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a time where most stories of conservation might be doom and gloom, Fat Bear Week truly allows us to celebrate our bears and the Katmai ecosystem overall,\u201d said Lian Law, a visual information specialist at Katmai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/2023\/09\/21\/fat-bear-week-2023-katmai\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post \u2019Tis the season to be jolly, and I\u2019m not talking about Christmas.
