{"id":4861,"date":"2023-10-10T11:55:13","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T16:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=4861"},"modified":"2023-10-10T11:55:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T16:55:16","slug":"end-of-an-era-the-cdc-has-stopped-printing-covid-vaccination-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/10\/10\/end-of-an-era-the-cdc-has-stopped-printing-covid-vaccination-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"End of an era: The CDC has stopped printing Covid vaccination cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/end-era-cdc-stopped-printing-covid-19-vaccination-cards-rcna118962\">NBC<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the end of an era for a once-critical pandemic document: The ubiquitous white Covid vaccination cards are being phased out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that Covid vaccines are not being distributed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-vaccine-delays-cdc-moderna-pfizer-ba66d06cbcc31ba4b22d60e93d3d5024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by the federal government<\/a>, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stopped printing new cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government shipped more than 980 million cards between late 2020, when the first vaccines came out, through May 10, according to the latest available data from the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal and local health officials don\u2019t expect the discontinuation of the cards to be a particularly big change, since the days of keeping them tucked in purses and wallets to ensure entry into festivals,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-business-health-coronavirus-pandemic-6ae309aff77864cb108fbf9a2dbcf449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bars and restaurants<\/a>&nbsp;are largely over. If you\u2019ve held on to your card, it\u2019s still valid as proof of vaccination. Otherwise, people who need their Covid immunization records will need to request them just like any other vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, the clinic, pharmacy or health department that provided the shot can provide those records. Every state and some cities have an\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/iis\/contacts-locate-records.html\" target=\"_blank\">immunization registry<\/a>, though rules vary on when records are included and options for obtaining copies of your records. Records from the mass vaccination sites held early in the pandemic also should be available in those registries, depending on state laws.
