But the virus isn\u2019t done with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While cases are not as high as they were at the end of this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/08\/well\/live\/covid-summer-surge.html\">summer,<\/a>&nbsp;newer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/covid-variant.html\">variants are spreading,<\/a>&nbsp;and experts predict that the patterns often seen over the last three years of the pandemic \u2014 the temperature drops, people cluster indoors, cases rise \u2014 will play out again this fall. That means it might be time to take stock (yes, again) of how you can minimize your risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt continues to be a moving target, and I think that continues to be hard for people,\u201d said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the holiday season approaches, here is a quick refresher on how to navigate the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-7f6056b2\">What precautions should I be taking at this point?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve heard it before, you\u2019ll hear it again:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/29\/well\/live\/covid-masks-guidance.html\">Masks can help you protect yourself<\/a>&nbsp;and others from becoming sick. So can washing your hands thoroughly and not touching your face with unwashed hands, said Dr. Joseph Khabbaza, a pulmonary and critical care doctor at Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/11\/well\/live\/covid-vaccine-booster-fall.html\">updated Covid vaccines<\/a>\u00a0can also reduce your chances of being infected, and especially cut down on your risk of serious illness, said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the chief of research and development at the V.A.
