What they are\u2014and how the world can prepare"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/11\/10\/viruses-future-pandemic-filoviruses-ebola-marburg-sars-nipah-machupo\/\">Fortune<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deaths from a handful of viruses that spill over from animals to humans are set to increase 12-fold by 2050 due to climate change and habitat encroachment, according to a new study&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gh.bmj.com\/content\/8\/11\/e012026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in the&nbsp;<em>British Medical Journal<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three of the four\u2014filoviruses like Ebola and Marburg, SARS, and Nipah virus\u2014are on the World Health Organization\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/21-11-2022-who-to-identify-pathogens-that-could-cause-future-outbreaks-and-pandemics#:~:text=The%20current%20list%20includes%20COVID,fever%2C%20Zika%20and%20Disease%20X.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of priority pathogens<\/a>, noted for their potential to cause the next pandemic.\u00a0But the Ebola-like Machupo virus is also a contender, the authors of the new study argue. And regardless of which pathogen ends up fueling the next global health crisis, they\u2019re all worthy of attention, the authors maintain.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason: Epidemics of the viruses they focused on are set to cause a combined death toll of more than 15,000 annually by 2050, even if they don\u2019t make an evolutionary leap that allows them to ravage the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at Boston-based biotech firm Ginkgo Bioworks honed in on four viruses likely to pose a significant public health risk and endanger economic or political stability.
