Scientists first warned of the highly mutated strain&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-covid-variant-ba286-2023-what-to-know-experts\/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovery over the summer.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In previous Nowcast updates, BA.2.86 was too uncommon to be shown separately and was grouped with other BA.2 strains,&#8221; the CDC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/whats-new\/covid-19-variant-update-2023-11-27.html?ftag=YHF4eb9d17\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before this point, officials have said the vast majority of new COVID-19 cases have been blamed on the XBB variant and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-variant-xbb-1-5-cdc-tracking-us-cases-dominant-strain\/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crowd of XBB&#8217;s closely related descendants<\/a>. Those include the HV.1 and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-variant-eg-5-now-eris\/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EG.5 variants<\/a>&nbsp;that are currently predominant nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC&#8217;s estimates carry wide margins of error around BA.2.86&#8217;s prevalence.
