Native to Asia,&nbsp;<em>Anopheles stephensi<\/em>&nbsp;prefers crowded urban environments over rural ones. That spelled trouble: These mosquitoes transmit malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s especially bad news for Africa where more than 93% of the world&#8217;s quarter-billion malaria cases were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-malaria-programme\/reports\/world-malaria-report-2023\">identified<\/a>&nbsp;last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The challenge relates to a new species invading an area in which most people have never been exposed to malaria,&#8221; says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/envs.emory.edu\/people\/bios\/vazquez-prokopec-gonzalo.html\">Gonzalo Vazquez-Prokopec<\/a>, an environmental scientist at Emory University. &#8220;And that could lead to severe outbreaks and transmission \u2014 you know, epidemic malaria.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New research by Vazquez-Prokopec and his collaborators, published in&nbsp;<em>Lancet Planetary Health,<\/em>&nbsp;may offer some hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers found that a surge in construction could be giving\u00a0<em>A. stephensi<\/em>\u00a0the foothold it needs to survive year-round, which, in turn, suggests a number of interventions that might dramatically knock down the insects&#8217; numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2023\/12\/04\/1217120913\/big-city-mosquitoes-are-a-big-problem-and-now-a-big-target\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"Vy GGA c jWp EOSpJh \"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NPR Goats &amp; Soda About a decade ago, a new kind of mosquito began showing up in African cities.
