{"id":5425,"date":"2023-12-05T18:43:01","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T00:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=5425"},"modified":"2023-12-05T18:43:04","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T00:43:04","slug":"rsv-in-winter-2023-everything-you-need-to-know-about-symptoms-treatments-shots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/12\/05\/rsv-in-winter-2023-everything-you-need-to-know-about-symptoms-treatments-shots\/","title":{"rendered":"RSV in winter 2023: Everything you need to know about symptoms, treatments, shots"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/rsv-winter-2023-symptoms-treatments-shots\/story?id=105305578\">ABC News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the United States heads into the colder weather months,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/protecting-babies-rsv-holiday-season\/story?id=105060679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)<\/a>&nbsp;have been ticking up across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the week ending Nov. 25, there were 8,863 positive RSV tests recorded, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/surveillance\/nrevss\/rsv\/natl-trend.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is typical for this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is slightly down from the previous week, when 9,914 tests were recorded and compared to last year when 16,067 positive tests were recorded during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although most cases of RSV result in mild illness, the virus can be dangerous among infants and young children as well as senior citizens. &#8220;RSV is a very common infection,&#8221; Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist and chief innovation officer at Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital and an ABC News contributor, said. &#8220;Of course, we want to avoid illness, but, for the vast majority of people, they will recover.
