{"id":5504,"date":"2023-12-12T16:11:26","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T22:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=5504"},"modified":"2023-12-12T16:11:29","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T22:11:29","slug":"antimicrobial-resistant-bacterial-infections-spreading-in-ukraine-amid-war-with-russia-cdc-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/12\/12\/antimicrobial-resistant-bacterial-infections-spreading-in-ukraine-amid-war-with-russia-cdc-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections spreading in Ukraine amid war with Russia, CDC says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/antimicrobial-resistant-bacterial-infections-spreading-ukraine-amid-war\/story?id=105452101\">ABC News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dangerous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/superbugs-leading-global-health-risk-report\/story?id=96948748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antimicrobial-resistant bacteria<\/a>&nbsp;are spreading among patients in Ukraine amid the country&#8217;s war with Russia, new federal data shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) before Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, along with a rise in traumatic wounds and overwhelmed health care systems, has led to increased detection of multi-drug resistant infections in Ukraine and surrounding countries, according to a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7249a5.htm?s_cid=mm7249a5_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infectious diseases and include antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites stop responding to the drugs, causing the infections to become difficult, or even impossible, to treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMR is considered one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antimicrobial-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top global public health threats<\/a>, according to the World Health Organization.
