{"id":5612,"date":"2023-12-26T16:09:24","date_gmt":"2023-12-26T22:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=5612"},"modified":"2023-12-26T16:09:28","modified_gmt":"2023-12-26T22:09:28","slug":"new-covid-variant-jn-1-surges-to-44-of-cases-cdc-estimates-even-higher-in-new-york-new-jersey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2023\/12\/26\/new-covid-variant-jn-1-surges-to-44-of-cases-cdc-estimates-even-higher-in-new-york-new-jersey\/","title":{"rendered":"New COVID variant JN.1 surges to 44% of cases, CDC estimates \u2014 even higher in New York, New Jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-covid-variant-jn-1-cases-cdc-new-york-new-jersey\/\">CBS News<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new COVID-19 variant that scientists call JN.1 now makes up about 44.1% of COVID-19 cases across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated Friday, marking another week of the fast-spreading variant&#8217;s steep rise in the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-variant-jn1-flu-surge-hospitals-cdc-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than two times larger<\/a>&nbsp;than the 21.3% that the CDC now estimates the strain made up of infections for the week ending Dec. 9, after Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among regions with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#published-sars-cov-2-sequences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enough data<\/a>&nbsp;reported from testing labs to produce these latest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">projections<\/a>, the CDC estimates that JN.1&#8217;s prevalence is largest in the Northeast&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/agencies\/iea\/regional-offices\/region-2\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">region<\/a>&nbsp;spanning New Jersey and New York, where the strain is 56.9% of cases in those states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;JN.1&#8217;s continued growth suggests that the variant is either more transmissible or better at evading our immune systems than other circulating variants.
