Determined to not be wrongly accused again, the New York-based physician\u2019s assistant turned to over-the-counter medication. She started popping Benadryl every morning to mask her symptoms, but that caused other problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a nasty experience,\u201d said McNamara who often suffered from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/news\/when-allergy-cold-medication-makes-you-drowsy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drowsiness<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a side effect of Benadryl. \u201cI\u2019m always tired. For me to have a little bit more fatigue in my life is not acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the pandemic has receded, McNamara is emblematic of the dilemma facing Americans. They\u2019re under pressure to show up for work and social gatherings, yet even the hint of a sniffle can be enough to brand someone an outcast.
