But four years after reports surfaced of a new respiratory illness, prompting a massive response among researchers, the disease\u2019s aftereffects \u2014 commonly called long covid \u2014 continue to confound doctors and patients alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know a lot about this particular&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>,\u201d said Francesca Beaudoin, chair of the department of epidemiology at Brown University. \u201cThat does not translate into an understanding of the long-term consequences of infection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many as 7 percent of Americans report having suffered from a slew of lingering symptoms after enduring covid-19, including fatigue, difficulty breathing, brain fog, joint pain and ongoing loss of taste and smell, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
