{"id":5698,"date":"2024-01-16T12:21:24","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=5698"},"modified":"2024-01-16T12:21:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:21:27","slug":"scientists-launch-first-human-vaccine-trials-for-deadly-nipah-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/01\/16\/scientists-launch-first-human-vaccine-trials-for-deadly-nipah-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Launch First Human Vaccine Trials For Deadly Nipah Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2024\/01\/11\/scientists-launch-first-human-vaccine-trials-for-deadly-nipah-virus\/?sh=37417d265121\">Forbes<\/a> The University of Oxford\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2024-01-11-first-human-vaccine-trial-deadly-nipah-virus-launched\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>Thursday that it had launched human trials for a vaccine to protect against the deadly Nipah virus, offering early hope against the dangerous pathogen that experts believe could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2023\/09\/15\/what-to-know-about-the-deadly-nipah-virus-as-india-races-to-contain-outbreak\/?sh=6f636014b8d5\">seed a new pandemic<\/a>, has no approved vaccines or treatments and kills as many as three in four of the people it infects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first participants in the clinical trial received doses of the vaccine over the last week, Oxford said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experimental shot is being developed by the university\u2019s Pandemic Sciences Institute and uses the same viral vector technology as the Covid-19 vaccine it successfully developed with pharma giant AstraZeneca. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early-stage trial will assess the vaccine\u2019s safety and immune response in 51 people aged between 18 and 55, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is expected to run for 18 months with further trials expected in a Nipah-affected country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brian Angus, the trial\u2019s lead investigator and professor of infectious diseases at Oxford, said the trial is \u201can important milestone\u201d in tackling Nipah, both by finding a way of preventing local outbreaks and also \u201chelping the world prepare for a future global pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forbes The University of Oxford\u00a0announcedThursday that it had launched human trials for a vaccine to protect against the deadly Nipah virus, offering early hope against the dangerous pathogen that experts believe could\u00a0seed a new pandemic, has no approved vaccines or treatments and kills as many as three in four of the people it infects.
