The program now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nwss\/rv\/COVID19-currentlevels.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">categorizes<\/a>&nbsp;every state with available data at \u201chigh\u201d or \u201cvery high\u201d viral activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surge might reach its peak this week or soon after, modelers predict, with high levels of transmission expected for at least another month beyond that. Hospitalizations and deaths have remained far lower than in previous years. There were around 35,000 hospitalizations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_select_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in the last week of December \u2014 down from 44,000 a year earlier \u2014 and 1,600 weekly deaths as of early December, down from 3,000.
