{"id":5736,"date":"2024-01-23T13:24:05","date_gmt":"2024-01-23T19:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=5736"},"modified":"2024-01-23T13:24:09","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T19:24:09","slug":"why-americans-may-be-at-risk-of-heart-problems-as-covid-flu-spread-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/01\/23\/why-americans-may-be-at-risk-of-heart-problems-as-covid-flu-spread-expert\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Americans may be at risk of heart problems as COVID, flu spread: Expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/americans-risk-heart-problems-covid-flu-spread-expert\/story?id=106573809\">ABC News<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/covid-hospitalizations-increase-9th-straight-week-cdc\/story?id=106320531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surge of respiratory viruses<\/a>, including COVID-19 and influenza, continue to spread across the United States, experts are warning it could lead to a rise in cardiovascular complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weekly COVID hospitalizations are currently sitting at 32,861 for the week ending Jan. 13, lower than the week before but similar to levels seen in January 2023, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_select_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, there were 14,874 weekly flu hospitalizations, lower than the week before but comparable to levels seen in November 2023, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>\u00a0shows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Americans may assume that complications from respiratory illnesses are limited to sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and other sicknesses that affect the upper or lower respiratory tracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Dr. Deepak Bhatt, director of Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City, said there are two potential routes by which these infections can contribute to heart problems.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"VEZ Z \"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABC News As a&nbsp;surge of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and influenza, continue to spread across the United States, experts are warning it could lead to a rise in cardiovascular complications.
