That, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, puts about 250,000 kindergartners at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/kindergarten-routine-vaccination-rates-fell-for-second-straight-year-cdc-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk for measles<\/a>, which often leads to hospitalization and can cause death. In recent weeks, an infant and two young children have been hospitalized amid an ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/1-new-case-of-measles-9-total-cases-philadelphia-health-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measles outbreak in Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0that spread to a day care center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a dangerous shift driven by a critical mass of people who now reject&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-vaccine-we-are-victims-of-our-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decades of science<\/a>&nbsp;backing the safety and effectiveness of childhood vaccines. State by state, they&#8217;ve persuaded legislators and courts to more easily allow children to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/school-vaccination-exemptions-record-kindergartners-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enter kindergarten without vaccines,<\/a>&nbsp;citing religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing vaccine hesitancy is just a small part of a broader rejection of scientific expertise that could have consequences ranging from disease outbreaks to reduced funding for research that leads to new treatments. &#8220;The term &#8216;infodemic&#8217; implies random junk, but that&#8217;s wrong,&#8221; said Peter Hotez, a vaccine researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. &#8220;This is an organized political movement, and the health and science sectors don&#8217;t know what to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing views among&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2023\/05\/16\/americans-largely-positive-views-of-childhood-vaccines-hold-steady\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republicans have steered<\/a>&nbsp;the relaxation of childhood vaccine requirements, according to the Pew Research Center. Whereas nearly 80% of Republicans supported the rules in 2019,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2023\/05\/16\/americans-largely-positive-views-of-childhood-vaccines-hold-steady\/#:~:text=The%20decline%20in%20support%20for%20vaccine%20requirements%20for%20children%20has%20been%20driven%20by%20changing%20views%20among%20Republicans%3A%2057%25%20now%20support%20requiring%20children%20to%20be%20vaccinated%20to%20attend%20public%20schools%2C%20down%20from%2079%25%20in%202019.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fewer than 60% do today<\/a>. Democrats have held steady, with about 85% supporting. Mississippi, which once boasted the nation&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2014\/06\/27\/anti-vaccination-crazies-strike-out-bible-belt-states-255483.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest rates of childhood<\/a>&nbsp;vaccination, began&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mississippi-vaccines-religion-747269fe3edcc20530a9aa17e6ad1a3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allowing religious exemptions<\/a>&nbsp;last summer.
