Forbes<\/a> Health officials around the world are scrambling to combat a rising tide of measles as falling vaccination rates and increased travel after the Covid-19 pandemic help the dangerous virus stage an alarming comeback, with countries in Europe declaring national emergencies as U.S. experts monitor growing cases at risk of spiraling into bigger outbreaks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been an \u201calarming resurgence of measles\u201d in Europe over the past year, warned<\/a> Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization\u2019s lead for the region, which covers 53 countries across Europe, Israel and parts of Central Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 42,200 people were infected with the virus in 2023, the WHO said, a 45-fold increase from the 941\u00a0cases<\/a>\u00a0reported in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVaccination is the only way to protect children from this potentially dangerous disease,\u201d Kluge said<\/a>, calling for countries to implement \u201curgent\u201d vaccination campaigns to stop the virus\u2019 spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazakhstan and Russia reported<\/a> the most infections in the countries providing data to the WHO\u201413,677 and 10,710 infections, respectively\u2014but even nations in Western Europe with globally regarded healthcare systems are facing a worrying surge that is at risk of growing out of hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) declared a\u00a0major incident\u00a0<\/a>on Friday amid the country\u2019s alarming surge of measles cases, with health officials now\u00a0scrambling to<\/a>\u00a0stem the tide with an emergency vaccination campaign. There have also been measles\u00a0outbreaks<\/a>\u00a0in France and Austria, and Romania\u2019s health ministry has placed the country on\u00a0red alert<\/a>\u00a0over its growing outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
