Desperate hunts for an open hospital bed.Emergency room arguments over medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not since the darkest days of the covid-19 pandemic, when hospital systems all over this country ruptured under the weight of the disease, has Brazil witnessed such scenes. But this time, it\u2019s not the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;that has led states all over the country to declare a state of emergency and even spurred the construction of a field hospital in the capital, Bras\u00edlia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s dengue fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease is ripping through much of South America, where scientists say rising temperatures due to climate change have both extended the territorial range of the mosquito that carries dengue and increased its proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first two months of this year, Paraguay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/pt\/documentos\/alerta-epidemiologico-aumento-casos-dengue-na-regiao-das-americas-16-fevereiro-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registered nearly<\/a>\u00a0100,000 suspected cases \u2014 more than five times the typical rate. Peru, racked by its own outbreak, has declared an emergency in much of the country. Argentina, too, has seen an explosion of cases.
