Also known as \u201cbreakbone fever,\u201d dengue can cause headaches, soreness, fever and rashes\u2014and, in extreme cases, death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, cases of dengue have surpassed historical records,\u201d Health Secretary Carlos Mellado said in a statement.\u00a0 The emergency declaration has no immediate impact on travel to or from Puerto Rico, a popular holiday destination, but it will make it easier for the health department to access funding for detection and prevention, Mellado said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\"Pe L rMWRLhjFyIcy Ki i e\">Pe L rMWRLhjFyIcy Ki i e<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time Puerto Rico declared a public health emergency over dengue, a mosquito-borne illness that has surged throughout the Americas this year.
