{"id":617,"date":"2022-09-30T17:02:25","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T22:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=617"},"modified":"2022-12-13T11:22:32","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T17:22:32","slug":"cdc-warns-of-severe-illnesses-from-monkeypox-as-ohio-reports-death-of-a-monkeypox-patient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2022\/09\/30\/cdc-warns-of-severe-illnesses-from-monkeypox-as-ohio-reports-death-of-a-monkeypox-patient\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC warns of severe illnesses from monkeypox as Ohio reports death of a monkeypox patient"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/29\/health\/ohio-monkeypox-death-cdc\/index.html\">CNN <\/a>&#8211; The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new warning to health care providers Thursday about severe illnesses in people with monkeypox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alert comes as Ohio reported that an individual with monkeypox has died \u2013 the third known death of a patient with monkeypox in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio listed the death in an update to its<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/odh.ohio.gov\/know-our-programs\/mpx\/monkeypox-dashboard\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0online monkeypox outbreak dashboard<\/a>\u00a0Thursday. The Ohio Department of Health on Friday said an adult male with monkeypox had died, and the individual had \u201cother health conditions.\u201d The CDC told CNN it is aware of the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first US death due to monkeypox was confirmed this month in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/12\/health\/california-monkeypox-death\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles County<\/a>. The county public health department and the CDC said the person had a severely weakened immune system and had been hospitalized. No further information will be made public, the department said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person in Harris County, Texas, who had monkeypox died in August, but the virus\u2019 role in that death has not been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deaths from monkeypox are extremely rare, and babies, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk. Among more than 67,000 cases reported globally in the current outbreak, there have been 27 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 25,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the United States, but recent case trends suggest that the outbreak is slowing in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falling case numbers might be a reflection of rising numbers of people vaccinated against the virus. This week, the CDC announced that it\u2019s expanding eligibility for the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine to higher-risk people who have not been exposed to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data posted by the CDC on Wednesday, men at high risk for monkeypox because they have sex with other men or because they live with HIV were 14 times more likely to be infected if they were unvaccinated compared with those who were at least two weeks past their first dose of the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/29\/health\/ohio-monkeypox-death-cdc\/index.html\">Continue reading on CNN<\/a><\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"POl  Mj\"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CNN &#8211; The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new warning to health care providers Thursday about severe illnesses in people with monkeypox.
